[Mastering Editing Part 4] Grab Attention in 3 Seconds! 'AI hooking' (Highlights & Narration)
Pete

Are your visuals, rhythm, and subtitles perfectly ready? Now, the final puzzle piece remains. It's the 'powerful hook' that will stop viewers from scrolling.
Shorts are decided within 3 seconds of starting. If you don't grab interest early on, viewers will ruthlessly move on to the next video. In this post, we'll introduce how to maximize early engagement using AlphaCut's AI hooking feature.
<Mastering AlphaCut Editing Series (Complete)>
- Part 1: Visuals & Design (Text, layout)
- Part 2: Cut Editing & Pacing (timeline, Silence Removal, Speed)
- Part 3: Auto Subtitles (Using AI Subtitles & Styling)
- Part 4: AI hooking (Highlights, AI Narration) 👈 Today's Topic!
💡 Before We Start: What is 'AI hooking'?
AlphaCut provides two powerful weapons to keep viewers engaged.
- Highlight hook: Shows the most interesting highlight scenes from the video for 3–5 seconds at the very beginning of the Shorts. This is a common technique used in movie trailers or variety show intros.
- AI Narration: Before the video starts, an AI voice actor reads a line like "Don't miss this video!" This strategy captures the viewer's ears first.
1. Preparing in Advance with a template (Highlight hook)
Finding and manually adding highlight sections every time you edit is a hassle. [template]If you enable the highlight hook setting in the AI will automatically find the most interesting scenes for you.
- Settings: [template] page → Check 'Use Highlight hook' at the bottom.
- Adjusting Time: By default, it is set to extract sections between 3 to 7 seconds. If you have a specific highlight hook length in mind, you can change the Min/Max Time.
2. Editing the Highlight hook
✅ Checking Status (Pro Tip)
Check next to the [AI hooking] tab at the bottom of the editing screen.
- A 🟢 green light means that a highlight hook or narration is already applied.
① When Automatically Applied via template (Editing)
Did you turn on 'Highlight hook' in the template? If so, AI has already found the most exciting section and placed it in the intro.
- Edit: Click the [AI hooking] tab near the bottom timeline. A dedicated hooking timeline will open. Here, you can adjust the start and end by dragging both ends of the section.
- Remove: If you don't want to use the highlight hook, you can remove it by clicking the [Remove hooking] button.
② If There is No Highlight (Manual Creation)
Did you turn off the highlight hook in the template, or is there no highlight hooking because AI couldn't find a suitable section? You can create it yourself.
- How to Create: Go to the [AI hooking] tab and click the [Highlight Section] button. Select and edit the desired section yourself to add your own highlight hooking.
3. Ear-Catching 'AI Narration'
Instead of a highlight video, this method plays curiosity-piquing lines in an AI voice actor's voice. It is commonly used to read out the Shorts title.
⛔ Note: Highlight hook and AI Narration cannot be used at the same time. (Choose only one!) If a highlight hook is already applied, please remove it first by clicking [Remove hooking].
① Generating Narration
- [AI hooking] tab, click the [AI Narration] button.
- Settings Modal: Type your line (e.g., Shorts title) in the input box and select the desired voice.
- Convert: Click the [Convert] button to generate the AI voice. (Consumes 1 minute of usage credit)
- Set Options: After adjusting the speed and volume, click the [Add to Shorts] button to add the narration to the very beginning of the Shorts.
② Application and Style Adjustment
- Edit: If you're not quite satisfied after listening to it, you can readjust the speed or volume at any time.
- Regenerate: If you don't like the tone itself, you can select a different voice actor and regenerate a new narration.
