[Mastering Editing Part 2] Creating Shorts with No Dull Moments: Cut Editing · Audio · Speed
Pete

In Part 1, if you completed the 'visuals (design)' of the video, now it's time to create the 'rhythm' of the video. In Shorts, a single second of silence means 'drop-off' . We will explore editing techniques that cut out loose sections and add a sense of speed to keep viewers watching until the end.

1. Precise 'timeline' Cut Editing
Using the timeline panel at the bottom of the editing screen, you can adjust the length of the video or remove unnecessary scenes. We'll show you how to go beyond simple cutting to add segments or refine details.
① Adjusting and Adding Segments
- Adjusting Length: You can adjust the start and end of a segment by clicking and dragging either end of the video segment with your mouse.
- Adding Segments: Try dragging the deactivated (dark blue) area on the timeline. You can add new segments to your Shorts.
- Navigating Distant Segments: Use the
<<or>>buttons at both ends of the timeline. You can move to video segments located far away to find and add the segments you want.
② Core Editing Buttons at a Glance
If you want to edit quickly and accurately based on the playhead, use the buttons above the timeline.
[(Trim Left): Immediately deletes the left portion relative to the playhead.](Trim Right): Immediately deletes the right portion relative to the playhead.[|](Split Segment): Splits the current segment into two based on the playhead.- 🗑️ (Delete Segment): Select an unnecessary segment and click the trash icon to remove it from your Shorts .
- ↩️ (Undo): Don't like the edit you just made? You can revert to the previous state with a single click. Edit boldly, and if it doesn't work, restore it immediately.
- ↪️ (Redo): Re-applies the undone action. Useful when you think, "Actually, that was right."
③ Capturing Details with the Magnifying Glass
Having trouble seeing the edit points? Use the magnifying glass icons.
+Magnifying Glass: Zoom in on the timeline to allow for precise frame-by-frame editing.-Magnifying Glass: Zoom out on the timeline to see the overall flow of the video at a glance.- You can also zoom in and out using Ctrl (Command) + mouse wheel.
④ Fine-tuning the Timing of 'Additional Elements'
Have you added elements like images, text boxes, or B-roll videos? You can also directly adjust 'when they appear and disappear' on the timeline.
- When you click the [Arrange Additional Elements] tab on the timeline, each element added to the Shorts appears as a separate timeline track.
- Just like the main video timeline, you can drag both ends of an element to increase or decrease the exposure duration .
- Dragging the center of the track allows you to move the appearance timing itself .
2. Secret of Editing Pros! 'Advanced Audio Features'
In many cases, what determines the quality of a video is actually 'sound' rather than 'visuals'. AlphaCut has gathered features that can elevate your audio quality with a single click. Check them out by clicking the [Advanced Audio Features] button in the center of the timeline. (This is a Pro membership exclusive feature)
① Silence Removal — Automatically remove 'dead zone' segments
When filming a video, silent segments or 'dead zone' often occur while you're choosing your words. Finding and cutting these out manually is a real chore.
- AI automatically detects and deletes the gaps where the audio is empty .
- Select Volume Threshold
- You can choose between 10%, 20%, or 30% to determine how quiet a sound must be to be considered 'silence'.
- The appropriate intensity varies for each video, so try applying the value that looks most natural after reviewing the results.
- Editing time is drastically reduced, and the immersion of the video is maximized.
② Voice Enhancement — Remove noise and background music
Have you ever been bothered by background noise in videos shot outdoors or interviews recorded in cafes?
- When you turn on the [Voice Enhancement] feature, AI removes background noise, wind sounds, chatter, etc. , and clearly highlights only the speaker's voice.
- It creates a clean sound as if recorded in a studio, allowing viewers to focus more on the content.
3. Adjusting 'Volume' for Main Shorts and Elements
Is the background music too loud, or are the added sound effects buried and inaudible? In AlphaCut, you can adjust the volume of each track separately.
- Main Shorts Volume: Adjust the overall volume of the Shorts using the slider on the left side of the timeline .
- Volume by Additional Element: The volume of each BGM, B-roll video, etc., placed in [Arrange Additional Elements] can be adjusted individually in the right panel .
4. Today's Trend: 'Playback Speed Settings'
Shorts viewers lack patience. Try increasing the sense of speed by playing slightly faster than the original speed.
- Easy Settings:
1.1xto2.0xplayback speed options are available for selection. - Manual Entry: If you have a specific speed in mind, you can set it by entering the number directly .
- Tip: For Korean content, we recommend 1.2x ! It's a magical speed that keeps viewers watching until the end without boredom, while the voice tone remains largely unchanged.
