Framing guide

Crop video for the frame each platform actually shows

Video crop is not just cutting off the edges. A YouTube upload, a vertical Short, an Instagram feed post, and an ad creative all use different aspect ratios and safe areas. The goal is to keep the face, product, captions, and key motion inside the frame viewers will actually see.

AlphaCut's video crop tool gives you common ratios such as 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, and 16:9, then lets you adjust the crop area in the preview. Processing happens in the browser, so you can create platform-specific versions without sending the original file to an external server.

Common aspect ratios and when to use them

9:16 fits Shorts, Reels, TikTok, and other full-screen vertical feeds. 1:1 is stable for square feed posts and thumbnail-style clips. 4:5 uses more vertical space in Instagram feeds. 16:9 remains the standard for YouTube, presentations, and website embeds.

If one source video will be published in several places, keep the master file and export a separate crop for each ratio. Safe areas differ by app, so a caption that works in one crop can be covered by buttons or descriptions in another.

Crop versus resize

Cropping selects part of the frame and changes the composition. Resizing keeps the whole frame and changes the dimensions. When adapting a horizontal clip to vertical, cropping usually feels more native than adding empty bars.

If the full product, slide, or screen recording must stay visible, resizing with margins may be better than an aggressive crop. Decide whether the priority is immersion or information preservation before exporting.

Protect captions, faces, and motion

Vertical apps overlay likes, comments, captions, and descriptions near the edges. Keep important captions closer to the center and avoid placing faces or products too low in the frame.

Preview more than the first frame. In footage with movement, a person may be centered at the start but leave the safe area halfway through the clip.
